Pearl Ashworth and her mother, Avis King (age 77 at time of death), were found stabbed to death in their apartment at 1376 Pearl Street. Avis was completely blind and her daughter, Pearl, was nearly blind. Avis King died at the scene as a result of her injuries. Pearl Ashworth was taken to the hospital where she died two days later on 4/16/80. There were five homicides against elderly women in this area between 4/14/80 and 9/28/80. Three occurred at residences. The other victims as follows: 52-year old Dolores Barajas was walking to work on the morning of August 10th, 1980 when she was attacked by an unknown suspect(s) and stabbed to death. Dolores had just moved to Denver from El Paso, Texas a few months prior to her murder. She worked in the cafeteria of the Fairmont Hotel, which was located in downtown Denver near 18th and Welton Streets. On the morning of August 22nd, 1980 ninety-year-old Kitty Bryden was near the corner of East 14th Avenue and Pearl Street when she was assaulted by two suspects. The suspects took the victim’s purse knocking her to the ground in the process. The victim sustained serious bodily injury and was transported to a local hospital. Unfortunately, Kitty Bryden succumbed to her injuries and died on September 18th, 1980. On the morning of August 24th, 1980 Florence Wilson was alone in her Capital Hill home when she was confronted by an unknown suspect who knocked on her door. The suspect pushed Mrs. Wilson to the floor. As a result of the attack, Mrs. Wilson sustained serious bodily injury. She was immediately transported to a local hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and died on September 28th, 1980. It had been suspected that some or all of these crimes may have been linked.
