On Tuesday January 27, 1998 at 11 a.m., a 23 year old female clerk was stabbed to death while working at an Adults Only Video, located at 1500 Paris Street in Sudbury. The victim was Renée Sweeney, a fourth-year Laurentian University student. Cash and other items were missing from the store. A short distance from the scene, the suspect abandoned a lightweight jacket and white cotton gloves which was located by a police dog. The unit Adults Only Video occupied at the time of the murder is currently part of a local health food store. This case remains unsolved.
On January 27, 1998, 23-year-old Laurentian University student Renée Sweeney was working a shift at her job at Adults Only Video in Sudbury, Ontario. Shortly after 11 am, a man approached the counter, stabbed Sweeney 30 times, and stole $200 from the register before fleeing. Sweeney was able to make it to the telephone before she died. Police found a lightweight windbreaker type jacket and white cotton gloves a short distance away from the store. Investigators say that Sweeney fought her attacker, as DNA was found under her finger nails. DNA was also recovered from the jacket. It appeared someone may have been harassing or stalking Sweeney in the weeks leading up to her death, investigators discovered. Shortly after the murder, Greater Sudbury Police arrested John Fetterly, 31, and charged him with first degree murder in the case, but later admitted they'd wrongly accused him, and issued an apology. Little progress was made on the case for nearly 20 years. In 2017, the Greater Sudbury Police started working with a DNA phenotyping lab, and released an updated image of what the suspect would have looked like at the time of the murder. The police had been running the DNA against the national DNA databank for years without success. Finally, in 2018, there was a match. Robert Steven Wright, an 18-year-old Lockerby Composite School student at the time of the murder, now faces a second-degree murder charge. He was arrested in North Bay, where he worked as a lab tech. As of 2022, he is still awaiting trial.
