Location of an S. S. Kresge department store. Seven died and many more injured when a Forth of July fireworks display was accidentally ignited by a saleswoman holding a sparkler. “The only dangerously obscure aspect of the building was this: although there was a rear exit to the building on the left side of the first-floor staircase, there was no exit whatsoever in the identical-looking area to the right of the staircase. There, instead of an exit, were three windows, blocked with temporary shelves and further secured with steel bars, wire netting, and sheet-iron doors to prevent break-ins from the rear alley. [Bellamy]. The victims were all found intertwined by this false door. Killed were a 4 year old boy, a female customer, and five female employees. Injuries were from fire, smoke inhalation, trampling, and broken bones/cuts resulting from jumping from upper story windows.
