Police responded around 10 a.m. on October 19, 2015, to Selamawit Alem's home in Coventry Hills to check on the welfare of an individual. When they entered, they found Alem and Julie Tran stabbed to death inside the residence. Investigators believe the women died 36 to 48 hours before they were found. Alem, who was born in Eritrea and had lived in Calgary for more than 30 years, had endured many hardships in her life. She lost her son a decade ago when he was beaten to death with a meat cleaver. She also suffered two bouts with cancer. She was a professional caregiver who looked after people with disabilities in her home, one of whom was Tran, preparing meals, providing medication and taking clients to appointments. Alem's 30-year-old son, Emanuel Kahsai, has been charged with first-degree murder in her death, and second-degree murder in Tran's death.
