After leaving her husband in Los Angeles, Winnie Ruth Judd began a job as a secretary at the Grunow Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. There she befriended x-ray technician Agnes Anne LeRoi and Hedvig "Sammy" Samuelson. The three women regularly had ladies' nights. Judd also began an affair with prominent businessman and well-known philanderer, Jack Halloran. LeRoi and Samuelson were also familiar with Halloran. During one ladies' night at LeRoi's and Samuelson's home, a fight allegedly broke out regarding Halloran's affections. Judd shot both LeRoi and Samuelson. With the help of an unnamed accomplice, Judd stuffed LeRoi's body in a trunk and dismembered Samuelson's body. Parts of Samuelson's body were divided between a trunk, a suitcase, and a hatbox. The murders were discovered when Judd attempted to transport the luggage from Phoenix to Los Angela via train. Police were notified due to the foul odor. The media coined the case "The Trunk Murders".
